It’s a fact that keeping your hands clean is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself against germs and reduce the spread of infection to yourself and others. And since the outbreak and spread of the highly contagious coronavirus epidemic hand hygiene has never been more important in modern times.Â
To keep hands clean and to reduce as many germs from the surface of your skin as possible, the CDC strongly advises washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds anytime you touch a shared or possibly contaminated surface. Surfaces like door handles, railings, ATMs, grocery store carts, mailboxes, packages, cell phones, keyboards, garbage bags, etc are all fair game for germs to hang out and wait for you to swing by so they can latch on. It’s also important to wash your hands after you cough, blow your nose, use the bathroom, have handled pets or pet treats, or have wiped down dirty surfaces or have used chemicals. And don’t forget about washing up before and after prepping food, especially if you’re handling raw meat.
It’s no surprise that when news of the coronavirus pandemic began to come out and the virus started to spread, hand sanitizer was one of the first things to fly off store shelves. Global shortages have made it difficult to find and if you do see it being offered online it’s often for bloated prices from third-party vendors looking to score big.Â
Can’t Find Hand Sanitizer? Make Your Own!
Made in controlled sterile environments in just the right proportions, commercial hand sanitizer is usually your best bet. But you can easily make your own hand sanitizer solution until the commercial stuff finds its way back into the market.
These two, easy DIY recipes are for alcohol-based natural hand sanitizers that you can spray and then rub onto your hands for times when washing with soap and water isn’t an option.Â
Tip: Stick to making your hand sanitizer in small batches. Alcohol can evaporate over time which can affect the ratio of alcohol to the other ingredients possibly decreasing its efficacy.
Here Are The Ingredients You’ll Need
The ingredients you’ll need to make your own hand sanitizer spray are listed down below. Of course, you can try gathering them on your own, but to make things super easy, online health and wellness shop DailyVita sells two different super convenient Hand Sanitizer Kits complete with everything you need to make your own all-natural hand sanitizing spray. Each kit will make you approximately 16 two-ounce bottles.
Isopropyl Alcohol – For your hand sanitizer solution to be effective against COVID-19 and other susceptible germs your hand sanitizer must have a concentration of at least 60%. The DailyVita Homemade Spray Kit comes with a 32-ounce bottle of 70% Isopropyl Alcohol.
Jojoba Oil or Fractionated Coconut Oil – All hand sanitizers include a moisturizing ingredient. This keeps hands from drying out and cracking which can make you vulnerable to the germs you’re trying to protect against. We suggest jojoba or liquid fractionated coconut oil which are both included in the DailyVita kit, but you can also use aloe vera gel or apricot kernel oil as well. These all absorb fast, are healthy for skin, and won’t leave you with a greasy feeling afterward.
Jojoba oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can help calm chapped, irritated skin, and reduce redness. It also has vitamins like E and B which can promote skin healing. Coconut oil is super hydrating, anti-microbial, and like jojoba is known to reduce inflammation.Â
Essential Oils – A few drops of essential oils will give your hand sanitizer spray a nice scent that will leave your hands feeling fresh. And the best part of making your own hand sanitizer is that you can customize it to smell however you like. They also come with added benefits. Essential oils like tea tree oil and myrrh have been proven in studies for having antimicrobial, anti-viral, antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce inflammation and soothe the skin. Lavender essential oil is also nourishing and calming to the skin and can promote healing. Citrus oils like lemon and orange are also anti-microbial and smell simply amazing. Always do a spot test on your skin to detect if you have an allergy before applying.Â
