When you’re in desperate need of a weekend getaway or a few days to unwind, head just 30 minutes outside Baltimore and under a 1 hour from Washington D.C., and you’ll find a unique country manor with an intriguing history to welcome you. The Columbia Inn at Peralynna, located in Columbia, Maryland , has been named “Baltimore’s Best” and featured on HGTV’s Dream Homes. The manor itself overlooks the rolling country hills of historic Cloak’s Elioak Farm, and was built as a replica of owner & innkeeper Cynthia’s childhood home, an American CIA safe house in Germany, whose father worked for the CIA. Today Cynthia and her husband David run the inn together as the first and only “green” designated hotel in Howard County, with a commitment to warm hospitality and attentive service.
Combing the amenities of a boutique hotel and the hospitality and warmth of a bed & breakfast, the Columbia Inn offers 19 suites, 9 with in-room jacuzzis. Most suites are surprisingly spacious and all decorated with a blend of European and art-deco treasures that the owners have collected over the years. You won’t be upset to find other amenities like Tempurpedic mattresses, flat screen TV’s, DVD players, electric fireplaces and luxurious bathrooms. For those who can’t completely unplug, there’s complimentary WI-FI throughout the property. But don’t hesitate to pull a book from their second-floor library, complete with an extensive DVD collection.
The atmosphere in the inn is light and welcoming and you might just find yourself feeling more relaxed than you thought was ever possible. Classical music plays in the main dining area throughout the day where you can sit and enjoy a carefully prepared complimentary breakfast made to order. Don’t pass up the 24-hour complimentary coffee and tea bar for a caffeine fix.
In the evening, guests are encouraged to help themselves to a selection of complimentary wines, cheeses, appetizers and dessert served nightly.
If you’re in need of a dinner recommendation, just a 1-minute drive down the road is The Iron Bridge Wine Company, serving American style cuisine and great wine. David told us he’s recommended it over 7,000 times and has never heard a complaint. So, go there.
For a little daytime fun, venture over to the historic and reportedly haunted Ellicott City (only 10 minutes away) to visit the charming shops, art galleries, and restaurants. At the B&O Ellicott City Station Museum, immerse yourself in 200 years of American history. If you’re looking for a little adventure, head to the Patapsco State Park to hike one of 200 trails, while you pass waterfalls and discover historic ruins. Need some retail therapy? Columbia Town Center is nearby with plenty of places to shop and dine.
