Do Ritz Crackers Go Bad? Shelf Life, Expiration and Storage

That sleeve of Ritz in the back of the pantry has been open since the last time you had people over. Before you serve it or toss it, here is how long crackers keep, what to check, and how to bring back the snap.

Do Ritz crackers go bad?

The Short Answer: Yes, Ritz crackers can go stale and eventually develop quality problems, though slowly. We couldn’t find a Ritz-specific shelf life from Ritz or any agency. K-State lists crackers in general at 8 months at 70°F when kept tightly closed, and the Windsor-Essex health unit lists 6 months for unopened packages. NDSU Extension and Virginia Cooperative Extension list crackers at 1 month once opened. These are general guidelines for crackers, not Ritz-specific guarantees. After opening, seal the sleeve tightly or use an airtight container, and re-crisp soft crackers only if they otherwise seem normal. Discard crackers with mold, pests, moisture damage or a rancid or otherwise off smell.

For a complete pantry storage reference, see our Food Storage Guide. For another shelf-stable staple, see our guide on whether breadcrumbs go bad.

Key Takeaways

  • Ritz crackers can go stale and eventually develop quality problems, though slowly. The times below are general cracker guidelines, not Ritz guarantees.
  • K-State lists crackers at 8 months at 70°F in a tightly closed package, and the Windsor-Essex health unit lists 6 months for unopened packages. NDSU Extension and Virginia Cooperative Extension list crackers at 1 month once opened.
  • Stale, soft crackers have absorbed moisture from the air. If they are only soft and otherwise normal, Missouri Extension says they can be re-crisped in a low oven.
  • Crackers contain added oil, so we’d expect them to be able to turn rancid. Re-crisping does not fix rancidity, mold or pests.
  • Discard crackers with mold, insects, webbing, moisture damage or a rancid or otherwise off smell.
Which Ritz Do You Have?
This guide focuses on Original Ritz crackers in boxes and sleeves, with a separate note on Ritz cracker sandwiches. K-State’s cupboard guide, Virginia Cooperative Extension’s guide and the Windsor-Essex health unit’s guide cover crackers in general and don’t name Ritz. Flavored crackers, Ritz Bits and filled sandwiches can differ, so follow any storage directions on the package. For other pantry staples, see our guides on whether breadcrumbs go bad and whether Stove Top stuffing goes bad.

What Do the Sources Say About Ritz Crackers?

These are extension and public health answers for crackers in general, plus USDA and FDA statements on dates.

What Matters What the Sources Say Source
Pantry time Crackers 8 months at 70°F, keep tightly closed. The table doesn’t split opened and unopened K-State
Pantry time, unopened packages Crackers 6 months. Once opened, store in airtight containers, out of light and heat Windsor-Essex health unit
Pantry time, unopened and opened Crackers 8 months unopened and 1 month opened. Keep the box tightly closed NDSU Extension
Pantry time, unopened and opened Crackers 8 months, and 1 month once opened Virginia Cooperative Extension
Fridge and freezer Opened crackers 3 to 4 months in the refrigerator, and crackers 3 to 4 months in the freezer Virginia Cooperative Extension
Past the date Times are general guidelines. Most foods are safe to eat if stored longer, but flavour and nutritional value will deteriorate. Discard if there is evidence of spoilage Windsor-Essex health unit
Date meaning Dates are not an indicator of safety USDA
Date wording “Best If Used By” wording shows a date label is about quality, not safety FDA
Stale crackers They absorb moisture from the air. Spread in a single layer, heat at 200 to 225°F for 5 minutes, then stir and repeat in 5-minute intervals until crisp Missouri Extension
Freezer Crackers and chips stay crisp when packaged tightly and frozen NDSU Extension
Pests Use containers with tight lids. Throw away food with evidence of infestation UC IPM

Do Ritz Crackers Expire?

USDA’s food product dating page says product dating is not required by federal regulations, except for infant formula, and that dates are not an indicator of safety. It adds that a product should still be safe and wholesome if handled properly until spoilage is evident. The FDA says manufacturers apply quality date labels at their own discretion, and supports “Best If Used By” wording for the date a product will be at its best flavor and quality. Both cover food in general, not Ritz by name.

The FDA’s July 2025 recall notice for RITZ sandwich cartons lists “Best When Used By” dates, written like 1 NOV 25. It says the plant code is on top of the package. We couldn’t find an official statement on where the date sits on a box of Original crackers, so check the box and the sleeves.

How Long Do Ritz Crackers Last Unopened?

K-State lists crackers at 8 months at 70°F and says to keep them tightly closed. The Windsor-Essex health unit lists crackers at 6 months in the pantry, and says its times apply to unopened packages unless otherwise specified.

K-State’s table doesn’t split opened and unopened crackers. NDSU Extension’s Food Storage Guide (reviewed January 2023) lists crackers unopened at 8 months and opened at 1 month, and says to keep the box tightly closed. Virginia Cooperative Extension lists crackers at 8 months in the pantry and 1 month once opened, matching NDSU. None of these guides is about Ritz, and none says how long a particular box keeps its crunch. We’d treat all of them as general guidelines and best-quality windows, not guarantees. Some sites give a firm Ritz-specific range, but we couldn’t trace those figures to Ritz or an agency.

Can You Eat Ritz Crackers After the Best-By Date?

The health unit calls its storage times general guidelines. It says most foods are safe to eat if stored longer, but flavour and nutritional value will deteriorate, and to discard food if there is evidence of spoilage. That is general guidance for packaged foods, not a Ritz rule.

A passed best-by date does not by itself mean crackers are unsafe, but we wouldn’t rely on the date alone. We found no source on crackers a year or two past the date. We’d check the box, the sleeve and the crackers against the signs below. These checks can reveal problems, but they can’t prove crackers are fine.

Where Should You Store Ritz Crackers?

K-State says to store foods in a cool, dry, dark location away from heat sources like appliances and the sun. It also says to check packages for damage and to use the oldest products first.

For crackers, we’d pick a pantry shelf away from the stove and dishwasher, and put the newest boxes behind the older ones. Those are our suggestions, not Ritz instructions.

How Long Do Ritz Crackers Last After Opening?

We found no Ritz-specific number for an opened box or sleeve. NDSU’s storage guide lists crackers opened at 1 month and says to keep the box tightly closed. Virginia Cooperative Extension lists the same 1 month once opened. NDSU’s guide asks how long food keeps before its quality deteriorates or it is no longer safe to eat, and doesn’t say which applies to crackers, so we’d read the figure as a quality window. The health unit says to use airtight containers once opened, out of light and heat.

A University of Missouri Extension recipe handout says crackers lose their crunch and go stale when they absorb moisture from the air. So an open sleeve is an easy way for moisture to get in. We’d move the crackers to an airtight container or tightly sealed bag, not just fold the sleeve over. For pest-proofing, UC IPM’s pantry pests page recommends containers with tight-fitting lids rather than plastic bags.

Do Ritz Crackers Need to Be Refrigerated?

Pantry storage is the standard in most of the guides we read. K-State and the health unit list crackers under pantry storage, in a cool, dry place. Virginia Cooperative Extension is the exception: it lists opened crackers at 3 to 4 months in the refrigerator. We’d still keep them in the pantry in an airtight container, and if you do refrigerate them, we’d seal them well so they don’t pick up moisture. Those are our suggestions.

Can You Freeze Ritz Crackers?

NDSU Extension’s food freezing basics page says crackers and chips stay crisp when packaged tightly and frozen, and gives no time limit. Virginia Cooperative Extension lists crackers at 3 to 4 months in the freezer. Both are general guidance, not specific to Ritz.

Freezing is an option, not a requirement. If you try it, we’d use a sealed freezer bag or airtight container so the crackers don’t pick up moisture, and judge their crispness after thawing. That is our own suggestion. It isn’t needed for a box you’ll finish in a few weeks.

Why Are My Ritz Crackers Soft?

Soft crackers have usually absorbed moisture from the air, per Missouri Extension. An opened sleeve left loose, a humid kitchen or a box stored near a sink or dishwasher can all let moisture in.

Softness alone is a texture problem, and Missouri Extension’s tip is to re-crisp soft crackers instead of throwing them out. If the crackers are only soft, the package is intact, and there is no sign of moisture damage, mold, pests or an off odor, re-crisping may restore the texture.

How Do You Make Stale Ritz Crackers Crispy Again?

Missouri Extension says to spread soft crackers in a single layer on a baking sheet and heat them at 200 to 225°F for 5 minutes. Then stir and continue in 5-minute intervals until crisp, so one round may not be enough. That handout is a recipe tip for crackers in general, not a Ritz test.

Do this only if the crackers are merely soft, the package is intact, and there is no sign of moisture damage, mold, pests or an off odor. Re-crisping fixes moisture, not rancidity, mold or an infestation. That is our own caution.

Can Ritz Crackers Go Rancid?

Ritz Original contains added oils, so rancidity is a reasonable concern as the crackers age. Ohio State University Extension’s Chow Line column on storing oil describes rancidity as a reaction of fats driven mainly by oxygen, with heat and light speeding it up. It treats rancidity as a quality problem, with smell as the practical test.

A Global Cold Chain Alliance storage manual chapter on rancidity says the rate of fat oxidation depends highly on temperature and that antioxidants can slow rancidity but not stop it. Both sources cover fats and oils, not crackers, so applying them to old crackers is our inference. If crackers have a rancid or otherwise off smell, discard them. We don’t suggest tasting to check.

How Can You Tell if Ritz Crackers Are Bad?

The FDA says to examine foods for signs of spoilage past their “Best if Used By” date, and the health unit’s rule is to discard food if there is evidence of spoilage. For crackers, we’d look and smell for visible mold, a rancid or otherwise off smell, crackers that are wet or clumped from moisture damage, a damaged or wet package, and any sign of insects.

UC IPM says webbing in tight places of a package or tiny holes in a food container are signs of a pantry pest infestation. These checks can reveal problems, but they can’t prove crackers are fine. We don’t suggest tasting to test.

Can Bugs Get Into Ritz Crackers?

Yes, pantry pests can get into packaged dry foods. UC IPM says to inspect all packages, especially ones that have been opened or are exposed, and to throw away any food that has evidence of infestation.

It also says pantry pests can live for many weeks without food and that by the time you spot one, it has usually spread to other food packages. Before restocking, it says to wash the shelves with soap and water and vacuum crevices. UC IPM’s page was last updated in 2013.

Can Old Ritz Crackers Make You Sick?

We found no source linking a particular age of Ritz crackers to a specific illness risk. Discard crackers with mold, signs of pests, a rancid or otherwise off odor, or a wet or damaged package. Proper storage matters, and appearance and smell alone can’t prove crackers are safe.

Seek medical advice if you become ill after eating a product you suspect was spoiled. This article is general information, not medical advice.

What About Ritz Sandwiches, Ritz Bits and Other Varieties?

We found no official shelf life for Ritz Bits, flavored Ritz or filled cracker sandwiches. The filling matters. If a sandwich contains peanut butter, see our guide on whether peanut butter goes bad. If it contains cheese, see whether cheddar goes bad.

The 2025 recall is a separate issue from shelf life. In July 2025, the FDA published a recall notice for specific RITZ Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwich cartons because some individually wrapped peanut butter packs could be mislabeled as cheese. The notice identified affected cartons by UPC, plant code and Best When Used By date, and it did not apply to all Ritz products. It says anyone with a peanut allergy should discard affected product.

The RITZ brand’s October 2026 press release announced RITZ Gluten Free Original crackers, available starting October 2026 at Walmart and Albertsons. The release gives no storage or shelf-life information, so we have nothing specific on them.

What Can You Do With Stale Ritz Crackers?

Crackers that are only a little stale, with no off odor or mold, can be re-crisped, as above. Crushed crackers work as a crumb topping on a baked dish such as our Greek yogurt mac and cheese. Whole ones go with dips like our gluten-free beer cheese dip or triple cheese fondue. For snack pairings, see our quick healthy snacks.

If you make your own crumbs, see our guide on whether breadcrumbs go bad.

Signs Something Is Wrong

  • Visible mold. The health unit says to discard food with evidence of spoilage. This is our own caution for crackers.
  • Insects, webbing or tiny holes in the package. UC IPM says to throw away food that has evidence of infestation.
  • A rancid or otherwise off smell. Ohio State Extension treats smell as the practical test for rancid fats. We don’t suggest tasting.
  • A wet or damaged package, or crackers with moisture damage. This is our own caution. Crackers that are only soft can be re-crisped, as above.
  • A peanut-allergy household with a sandwich carton that matches the 2025 recall notice. The FDA says to discard affected product.

These checks can reveal problems, but they can’t prove crackers are fine.

Things That Do Not Automatically Mean Crackers Are Spoiled

  • A loss of crunch. Missouri Extension says crackers go stale when they absorb moisture, and that soft crackers can be re-crisped.
  • A passed best-by date on a sealed, undamaged box stored cool. USDA says dates are not an indicator of safety, and that a product should still be safe and wholesome if handled properly until spoilage is evident.
  • Crushed crackers or crumbs at the bottom of a sleeve. This is normal handling.

None overrides the signs above.

Quick Storage Reference

  • Pantry: Cool, dry place. NDSU and Virginia Cooperative Extension list 8 months, K-State lists 8 months at 70°F, and the health unit lists 6 months for unopened packages. All are general guidelines.
  • Opened: NDSU and Virginia Cooperative Extension list 1 month, and NDSU says to keep the box tightly closed. We’d use an airtight container and not just a folded sleeve.
  • Soft crackers: Only if they otherwise seem normal, spread in a single layer and heat at 200 to 225°F for 5 minutes, then stir and repeat in 5-minute intervals until crisp, per Missouri Extension.
  • Freezer: An option if tightly packaged, per NDSU Extension. Virginia Cooperative Extension lists 3 to 4 months.
  • Fridge: Virginia Cooperative Extension lists opened crackers at 3 to 4 months. Most guides we read list pantry storage.
Situation What to Do
Sealed box, a few months past the date, stored cool (an example, not an approved time window) USDA says dates are not an indicator of safety. Check the box and crackers first.
Sealed box, 2 years past the date We found no source on crackers that old, and we can’t confirm their condition from the date alone.
Opened sleeve left out, crackers soft If they are only soft and show no mold, pests, moisture damage or off odor, Missouri Extension suggests re-crisping them: single layer, 200 to 225°F for 5 minutes, then stir and repeat in 5-minute intervals until crisp.
Crackers have a rancid or otherwise off smell Discard them. This is our own caution based on how rancid fats are judged by smell.
Visible mold on crackers Discard them.
Webbing, insects or tiny holes in the package Discard them. UC IPM says to throw away infested food, then wash the shelf.
Damp or clumped crackers If there is mold, a wet or damaged package, pests or an off odor, discard them. If they are only soft from ordinary humidity, see the re-crisping row. This is our own caution.
Sandwich carton that matches the 2025 recall notice, with a peanut allergy in the home Discard it. The FDA says anyone with a peanut allergy should discard affected product.
Crackers you want to hold longer Freezing is an option. NDSU Extension says crackers stay crisp when packaged tightly and frozen, and Virginia Cooperative Extension lists 3 to 4 months. We’d judge crispness after thawing.
How We Checked This
In October 2026 we read K-State’s cupboard storage guide (June 2026) and NDSU Extension’s Food Storage Guide (reviewed January 2023). We read Virginia Cooperative Extension’s food storage guidelines (revised October 2025) and the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit’s food handlers’ storage guide (2019). We read a University of Missouri Extension handout (revised April 2024) and NDSU Extension’s freezing page (reviewed September 2022). We read the FDA’s July 2025 recall notice for RITZ Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches and the brand’s October 2026 gluten free press release. We also read USDA’s food product dating page, the FDA’s March 2024 page on cutting food waste and UC IPM’s pantry pests page, which was last updated in 2013. For rancidity we read Ohio State Extension’s 2007 column on oil and a Global Cold Chain Alliance chapter, and both cover fats and oils, not crackers. We couldn’t load a Ritz or MondelÄ“z storage FAQ or product page. We found no Ritz-specific shelf life, no Ritz-specific opened-package time, no official location for the date on an Original box and no shelf life for Ritz Bits or filled sandwiches. The ingredient details come from retailer listings of the US box label, since we couldn’t reach the manufacturer’s page. Our own suggestions say we’d or we suggest. This article is general information, not medical advice.

Ritz Crackers Go Bad FAQ

Do Ritz crackers go bad?

Yes, slowly. We found no Ritz-specific shelf life, but K-State lists crackers at 8 months at 70°F and the Windsor-Essex health unit at 6 months. These are general guidelines, not guarantees. Crackers lose crunch when they absorb moisture, and we’d expect old crackers to be able to turn rancid.

How long do Ritz crackers last unopened?

We found no Ritz-specific figure. K-State lists crackers in general at 8 months at 70°F and does not split opened and unopened. The Windsor-Essex health unit lists 6 months for unopened packages. NDSU Extension and Virginia Cooperative Extension list 8 months unopened.

How long do Ritz crackers last after opening?

We found no Ritz-specific number. NDSU Extension and Virginia Cooperative Extension list crackers opened at 1 month, which we’d read as a quality window. Keep them in an airtight container, away from light, heat and moisture, since moisture from the air makes crackers stale.

Can you eat Ritz crackers after the expiration date?

USDA says dates are not an indicator of safety, and that a product should still be safe and wholesome if handled properly until spoilage is evident. The health unit says to discard food with evidence of spoilage. Check the box and crackers for the signs in the red box.

How do you make stale Ritz crackers crispy again?

Missouri Extension says to spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet and heat them at 200 to 225°F for 5 minutes. Stir and continue in 5-minute intervals until crisp. Do this only if they are merely soft and otherwise normal, since it won’t fix rancid, moldy or infested crackers.

Why are my Ritz crackers soft, and is it OK to eat stale crackers?

Soft crackers have usually absorbed moisture from the air, per Missouri Extension, and an opened sleeve left loose or a humid spot can do it. Its tip is to re-crisp them instead of throwing them out. If they have mold, pests, moisture damage or a rancid or otherwise off smell, discard them. We don’t suggest tasting to test.

Can you freeze Ritz crackers?

NDSU Extension says crackers and chips stay crisp when packaged tightly and frozen. Virginia Cooperative Extension lists crackers at 3 to 4 months in the freezer. These are general guidelines, not Ritz-specific, and we’d judge crispness after thawing.

Do Ritz crackers need to be refrigerated?

Pantry storage is the standard in most of the guides we read, including K-State and the health unit. Virginia Cooperative Extension lists opened crackers at 3 to 4 months in the refrigerator.

How can you tell if Ritz crackers are bad?

Look for mold, insects, webbing or tiny holes in the package, crackers that are wet or clumped from moisture damage, and a rancid or otherwise off smell. We found no cracker-specific source on mold, so visible mold means discard them. We don’t suggest tasting to test.

Can bugs get into Ritz crackers?

Pantry pests can infest packaged dry foods. UC IPM says to inspect packages, especially opened ones, use containers with tight lids and throw away infested food.

Where is the date on a box of Ritz crackers?

The FDA’s recall notice for sandwich cartons lists Best When Used By dates and a plant code printed on top of the package. We found no official statement for Original boxes, so check the box and sleeves.

What can you do with stale Ritz crackers?

If they are only stale, with no off odor or mold, re-crisp them or crush them into a topping for a dish like our Greek yogurt mac and cheese. Try them with gluten-free beer cheese dip or triple cheese fondue.
