Ninja Foodi Grill Review and Recipes

We Tested The Ninja Foodi Grill. Here’s Why We Love It

Do you love to grill, but don’t do it as often as you like? Maybe you don’t like the hassle or your outdoor living space won’t accommodate a BBQ? Or maybe you don’t have an outdoor living space?

A new kitchen appliance by Ninja called the Ninja® Foodi™ Grill is about to change all that and make grilling easy year-round, even if you have limited space to work with. We got a chance to give it a test drive before its official release and after using it for a few weeks we’re officially hooked!

Not only does the Ninja Foodi Grill grill foods amazingly (see below), but it also performs a variety of other functions to make it worthy of adding to your collection of kitchen appliances.

If you’re currently thinking, “Do I really need another kitchen gadget?” – let me be the first to tell you, yes.

Keep reading to see what our first impressions are and scroll down for the first yummy recipe we created using the Ninja Foodi Grill.

First Impressions And Grilling Experience with Ninja Foodi Grill

When I first learned about the Ninja Foodi Grill, I have to admit I was skeptical about how it would perform. I wondered if it actually gives food those amazing grill marks. Would the flavor be there? Would the food be juicy? Would we get that beautiful caramelization if the meat was glazed with a BBQ sauce or marinade?

I can now confidently say the answer is yes, yes, and yes. Not only is it an amazing indoor grill, but it exceeded my expectations in every way.

My first test cooking with the grill was with some zucchini and squash simply seasoned with salt and pepper along with some jumbo shrimp I had marinating.

The Ninja Foodi Grill Making Grilled Veggies Perfectly

The grill can take up to 8 minutes to pre-heat so this is a good time to do any prepping or other tasks you might need to do. I made sure the grill grate was inserted and selected the max heating setting for 510 degrees, which is suggested for grilling the shrimp and veg.

The display on the unit will show the pre-heating progress and alert you with an ‘ADD FOOD’ message. This is your cue to open the hood and get that food on the grill.

I tossed my veggies in a bowl with some grapeseed oil and got them on the grill first. It’s recommended to flip halfway between cooking so you get those gorgeous grill marks on both sides. I forgot to do that, but the amazing result is pictured just below.

Ninja Foodi Tip: It’s recommended you use oils with a high smoke point like canola, grapeseed, or avocado to prevent smoking while grilling.

Now check out these amazing grilled shrimp made with the Ninja® Foodi™ Grill:

Aren’t they gorgeous? The veggies also came out tender and amazing.

When deciding what else I wanted to make I realized some of my favorite grilled dishes come from Vietnamese restaurants. That’s when I knew I had to make something similar for the Ninja Foodi Grill

Heating Up The Ninja Foodi Grill

You can get the Ninja Foodi Grill started by selecting the cooking function you’d like and set your timer. You can also adjust temperatures on the display panel as well. Once programmed the grill will begin to pre-heat.

Once you pick your cooking function, temperature and time, the unit will begin to pre-heat. Higher temperatures will take up to approximately 8 minutes to heat up. This is a perfect time to assemble ingredients, set the table or finish cleaning some dirty dishes.

You have a choice to grill at 4 different preset temps for grilling:

  • Low – 400 °F (bacon, sausages, calzones, meats with thick sauces)
  • Medium – 450 °F (frozen meats, steak tips, etc. )
  • High – 500 °F (steaks, burgers, chicken, hot dogs, etc.)
  • Max – 510 °F  (pizzas, veggies, fruit, kebabs, fresh and frozen seafood)

Temperatures can be set much lower if you are performing other functions like air crisping, baking, or dehydrating.

Air Crisping With The Ninja Foodi Grill

After I found the Ninja Foodi Grill knocked grilling out of the park I couldn’t wait to try the air crisper function. It allows you to essentially ”fry” and crisp foods with air circulation instead of traditional frying that uses oil.

The benefit is a healthier way to enjoy “fried” foods without all the extra fat and calories. In the end, you still get that satisfying crispy crunchy exterior that only frying can give you.

I first tested it out with some chicken cutlets I had marinated in garlic, vinegar, and spices and then breaded. Usually, I fry them in olive or grapeseed oil on the stove top and they come out crispy on the outside yet super moist on the inside. But frying is messy and not super healthy.

Using the Ninja Foodi Grill air crisper function I couldn’t believe how quickly they cooked and how super crispy the final result was.

It was official: The air frying function on the Ninja Foodi Grill also worked amazingly well!

Here’s my first batch of air-crisped chicken cutlets:

Air fried crispy chicken breasts made with the Ninja Foodi Grill

Tip: You cannot grill and air crisp at the same time in this unit, so you’ll have to make a cooking plan for your recipes if making a meal using both settings.

What Else Can The Ninja Foodi Grill Do?

The capability to perform a variety of different functions has been the current trend for kitchen appliances released in the last couple of years. And this is a good thing.

Finally, companies are beginning to understand that most of us have limited counter and storage space. The Ninja Foodi Grill falls right in that category of a multi-function appliance. Not only does it grill like a total rock star, but it also roasts, bakes, and dehydrates.

Jerky anyone?

What Comes In The Ninja Foodi Grill Box

Here’s what came in the box (some models may come with different accessories or functions):

The Ninja Foodi Grill Unit – This is the main unit that can cook food at temperatures as high as 510 or as low as 135 for dehydrating. To turn on, press the power button on the front display and then choose a cook function (grills, air crisp, dehydrate, roast or bake). The top part of the Ninja® Foodi™ Grill, or the hood, lifts to reveal the interior where different cooking accessories can be inserted. A splatter guard on the underside protects the heating element from grease and can easily be removed to clean. The Ninja Foodi Grill can be set up on a counter, kitchen table or small kitchen cart. Just make sure you have enough clearance to open the hood.

Cooking Pot (dishwasher safe) – Shaped like a deep roasting pan this is inserted first into the Ninja Foodi Grill is used to catch drippings when grilling or air frying. You can also use this part by itself to roast or bake foods. You can even insert a cake or pie pan inside to bake up a lovely dessert.

Grill grate (dishwasher safe) – This gets inserted over the cooking pot for grilling and is part of the magic that helps the Ninja Foodi Grill superbly execute those amazing grill marks. Two handles on the side allow for easy insert and removal. I found it super easy to clean with some warm soapy dishwater and a scrub brush for sticky bits. This piece has some weight behind it.

Crisper Basket (dishwasher safe) – The crisper basket is used whenever you want to air fry dehydrate. The grill grate gets removed and the basket gets placed inside the cooking pot. Also, super easy to remove and clean.

Everything that comes in the box with the Ninja Foodi Grill including grill grate, air fry basket, skewers and recipe book

Kebab Skewers (dishwasher safe) –  What’s more yummy than some grilled kebabs? 5 skewers came packed inside the box for instant grilling fun.

Cleaning Brush (dishwasher safe) — This little cleaning brush helps to scrub and scrape crusted on bits left stuck to the grate and splatter shield after grilling.

Ninja Foodi Grill Buying Tip: Most of us will do just fine with the base model of this grill. But if you like to have all the bells and whistles with all your kitchen gadgets then you might want to check out the upgraded model of Foodi Ninja Grill. It’s a little more money but comes with an integrated meat thermometer and an additional roasting rack.

The Major Benefits: Who Needs The Ninja Foodi Grill?

Even if you already have an outdoor grill, do you always feel like firing it up? Sometimes it can be a hassle especially if you’re only making a small quantity of food. What about when the weather isn’t ideal or you’ve run out of gas or charcoal briquettes? And the clean up can be a drag.

This is where the Ninja Foodi Grill comes in. It makes perfectly grilled food without having to plan or worry about your eyebrows burning off or if there’s a storm brewing.  You can make delicious grilled dishes anytime you like, in any quantity, any time of year. It’s perfect for singles, couples and would make a great interactive cooking experience to use at your family or holiday parties.

The Ninja Foodi Grill grills meats that are fresh, marinated and even frozen. You don’t have to worry about defrosting! Every time you’ll get perfectly grilled steaks and super juicy burgers.

Making The Recipe: VIETNAMESE MIXED GRILL

Vietnamese Mixed Grill Platter Made With The Ninja Foodi Grill

While this recipe may seem like a lot of ingredients, it’s very easy to make. It’s mostly stirring, marinating, and grilling. Here are the ingredients:

ingredients prepped and laid out for the Vietnamese mixed grill marinade on marble

For this Vietnamese-inspired marinade ingredients like rice wine vinegar, fish sauce, hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, brown sugar, fresh ground pepper, sambal oelek chili sauce, shallots, and lemongrass are blended and then poured over the meats. If you can’t find fresh lemongrass most supermarkets carry a paste version in the produce section by the herbs.

You can also omit this if you can’t find it either. Chicken and shrimp should be marinated for a minimum of 2 hours. For maximum flavor overnight is best while shrimp only need about 20 minutes. I threaded the shrimp on the kebab skewers for easy grilling.

Vietnamese style marinade being poured over steak chicken and beef

While the meats are marinating, prepare the Vietnamese dipping sauce. Don’t go without it. It’s absolutely addicting. And while a sauce with a base of fish sauce, garlic, chili, and lime juice might not seem appetizing, it is utterly delicious. Trust me.

Vietnamese dipping sauce recipe being whisked in a bowl next to chilis, garlic, sugar and lime

The Ninja Foodi Grill was set to MAX and preheated. I brushed the grate with grape seed oil and got grilling. Grilling all the meats took about 25 minutes in total. Here they are below:

An up close shot of the cooked and grilled Vietnamese mixed grill made with the Ninja Foodi Grill

To serve: make a platter of lettuce leaves, cucumber sticks, carrot sticks, bell pepper slices and any other veggies you enjoy. Herbs like cilantro, basil and mint are essential. Vietnamese rice paper rolls and vermicelli rice noodles can be served along with the platter of meats, veggies, and herbs to be rolled and then dipped.

This makes a great dish to make when inviting over friends and family. Begin by gently dipping rice paper on a dish of water. Don’t over soak. Place on your plate and then fill with your favorite ingredients.

  • 1.5  lbs extra large shrimp

Marinade Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup grapeseed oil ( or other high smoke point oil)
  • 2/3 cup rice wine vinegar
  • 4 tbsp fish sauce
  • 4 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 3 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp lemon grass, chopped ( or 1 Tablespoon lemongrass paste found in produce section)
  • 1 tbsp Sambal Oelek or asian chili paste
  • 5 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 2 tsp black pepper

Vietnamese Dipping Sauce Ingredients (Nuoc Cham)

  • 1/4 cup fish sauce
  • 1/4 cup lime juice
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 2 tsp sugar (or more to taste)
  • 3 cloves of garlic, mined
  • 1/2 tsp chilis, finely sliced (Thai Bird, Serrano or Jalapeno)

Suggested Accompaniments For Serving

  • Vietnamese Rice Paper, for wrapping rolls
  • lettuce leaves
  • carrot sticks
  • cucumber Sticks
  • slices bell peppers
  • Sambal Oelek Chili Sauce
  • Hoisin Sauce

DIRECTIONS

Making The Marinade

  • Combine all marinade ingredients in a blender and process until smooth. If you don't have a blender, whisk all ingredients in a medium size bowl and set aside. This marinade makes about 2 cups.

Marinating The Meats

  • Pour the marinade over the steak and chicken (in separate bowls, about 1/3 cup each). Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or overnight for best results. The shrimp only needs to be marinated for 15 to 20 minutes before grilling.

Grilling The Meats On The Ninja® Foodi™ Grill

  • Remove the meats from the refrigerator and marinade letting as much drip off as possible. Preheat the Ninja® Foodi™ Grill on high. Brush the grill grates with grape seed, avocado or canola oil and grill the chicken first (14 minutes) flipping halfway through. The steak will take 7-9 minutes. Again, flip half-way through. Finally grill the shrimp for 3 minutes. You can flip if you like. Be sure to brush the grates before adding a new meat. When the meats are finished grilling remove to a platter and cover with foil to keep warm.

Making The Vietnamese Dipping Sauce (Nuoc Cham)

  • Combine all ingredients in a small bowl good for dipping. Adjust seasonings according to taste. Add more chili for more heat if you like.

To Serve

  • Sprinkle the platter of grilled meats with scallion and finely chopped peanuts. Serve along side the suggested lettuce and vegetables. Guests can dip the rice paper on a plate of warm water to moisten and then roll with meats and veggies for a delicious Vietnamese style treat. Don't over soak the rice paper or it becomes difficult to work with. 10 seconds is enough. Once rolled, dipping sauces can include the Nuoc Cham made above, hoisin sauce and sambal oelek chili sauce. Enjoy!

  1. I was curious if you could add water to the pan the grill plate sits in and add liquid smoke while you are grilling?

    1. Hi Denise! When the grill grate is inserted into the bottom pan to collect the drippings there is about 1/2 inch clearance, so liquid smoke with a little water would definitely fit in the pan. I think you would be probably better off adding a drop or two to your marinade though. The extra water may steam the food, not allowing you to get that nice crispy exterior the Ninja Grill does so well. I was also thinking about ways to add smoke flavor and wanted to experiment using a few soaked wood chips underneath. I’ll update you as soon as I solve this little Ninja Foodi Grill mystery. 🙂

  2. Can the ninja foodi grill, air crisp function be use for frozen food such as pizza rolls and taquitos that are in the frozen food section?

    1. Yes, it can! The recipe booklet that comes with the grill includes air crisp directions for common frozen foods like chicken nuggets, fish sticks, tater tots, mozzarella sticks and more. Pizza rolls are specifically mentioned and can be air crisped at 390°F for 12-15 minutes.

    1. This one we had to research since there are no recommendations for the Ninja Foodi Grill and prime rib. Probably because you would only be able to fit a piece of prime rib meat enough for 2-3 serving at most. But that’s okay! Kenji Lopez over at Serious Eats published an article reporting that to perfect prime rib it should be cooked at 200 degrees F or lower, rested for 20 to 30 minutes, and then finished for a couple of minutes at 500-550° or just long enough to get a gorgeous crust. The low temp can be set on the Ninja Foodi Grill with the dehydrator option. When you’re ready to give the exterior a blast of heat for that perfect prime rib exterior, use the grill option on MAX (550 degrees F) just until a crust has formed. This is something the grill does really well.

You can read the full prime rib cooking article here if you like: https://www.seriouseats.com/2009/12/the-food-lab-how-to-cook-roast-a-perfect-prime-rib.html

  3. i purchased the foodi pro grill & have already cooked multiple things on it I AM IN LOVE LOVE LOVE with this product! i was totally amazed i cooked wings with the air fry setting & my grandson told me they were the best he ever ate in his life! it is a definite must have in your kitchen my husband told me i need to get rid of my other pots & pans & just cook on this LoL! no smoking & have grilled taste i cooked a pork loin on the grill it came out moist & crisp in 20 minutes !

    1. Bobbi, isn’t it the coolest cooking appliance ever? I love that your husband told you to throw everything else away!!! 😀 I’ve cooked so many things on this grill/crisper (shrimp, scallops, kababs, crispy fish in the air crisper) and there’s not one thing that hasn’t turned out amazing. I can’t wait to try the wings in the air crisper! Thank you for sharing!

    1. Hi David! It can be a hard decision which one to choose, but will totally depend on what kind of cooking you do most or want to do most in your home. Also, things to consider would be space and how many people are in your household.

The Ninja Foodi Indoor Grill is a smokeless indoor grill that also air crisps, bakes, broils, roasts and dehydrates. You get awesome grill flavors and grill marks without the hassle that comes with an outdoor bbq. The grill can fit 4 burgers at one time.

The Ninja Foodi Pressure Cooker – pressure cooks, air crisps, dehydrates, bakes, broils, sears/sautés, steams, slow cooks and makes yogurt. Think soups, stews, roast chickens, steamed veggies, and tough cuts of meat like brisket made tender that you can sear off before serving. No grill marks though. It comes in a 6.5 quart or 8 quarts and may work better for larger families (5 or more) making a lot of food at one time is necessary.

You can check out Foodi recipes here: https://www.ninjakitchen.com/recipes/ninja-foodi-recipes/?q=&sort=Newest&tags=244&page=1

Hope this helps make the decision a little easier!

  4. Thanks for the reply. I’m thinking grill……..but we very occasionally cook whole chickens. Could you fit a small chicken in the Foodi Grill roasting pan? It’s just my wife and I so the bird would be sized accordingly.

    1. You could definitely do a smaller whole chicken with just the roasting pan. When only the roasting/drippings pan is inserted there is a 10x10x4.5 inch space. Alternatively, you could also buy a whole chicken already cut up, (or do it yourself) and cook it on the grill or roast it in the pan. It’s also great for making healthier “fried” chicken in the air crisper. Let us know how you make out!

  5. Thanks again! Sounds like the Grill will “fit the bill!” We already have a slow cooker/crock pot that serves well for creating soups and stews, so that requirement is negated. And most of our favorite foods will be perfectly prepared using the Grill with the advantages you’ve already described. All the available online reviews are very positive, as with all Ninja Foodi products so it looks like a no-brainer. Here we go!

    1. Yes, you can definitely bake a cake with the Ninja Foodi Grill BAKE setting. The largest cake pans that will fit inside is one 9-inch round cake pan or one 8-inch x 8-inch cake pan.

    1. Here are a few ways to make eggs in the Ninja Foodi Grill:

      1. Baked Egg Dishes – Try our Crustless Keto Veggie Quiche and follow the cooking temps on the cooking temperature in the recipe directions. You would have to place it in a heat-safe baking dish and then place that inside the roasting tray to cook.

      2. Air Crisper Hard-Cooked Eggs (like hard-boiled) – Place the eggs in the air crisper basket and cook at 250°F for 13 minutes. Open the hood and remove them after 5 minutes when they’re easy to handle.

      3. Egg Bites – Mix eggs with a little milk, cheese and your favorite fillings like ham, bacon, peppers, broccoli and/or spinach. Pour them the batter into a silicone egg bite accessory and bake at 350°F for 15 minutes or until just set. These egg bites are great for mornings on the go. You can get the accessory for less than $10 on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/2NF9DEQ

      4. Over Easy or Scrambled Eggs: The Ninja Foodi Grill Pro model comes a griddle cup perfect for making eggs. This accessory isn’t available for separate purchase yet but, you can try using a small pan of your own if you don’t have the Pro version. Heat safe baking ramekins like these would be perfect! They’re pretty adorable too.

  6. Can you use corningware baking pans or your own bakeware in the Ninja foodi Air Grill or do you sell the baking pans to fit this grill? I love this product but haven’t tried to bake or dehydrate yet. Thank you for a great product!

    1. Hi Karen! We’re not the Ninja website, but a blog that has tested the grill. As long as it fits you should be able to use your own bakeware. Corningware style bakeware should also be fine but have been occasionally known to break even in a regular oven. For dehydrating you can use the air crisper basket.

There are also other accessories that now come with the Ninja Foodi Grill Pro version like a griddle, griddle cup, and roasting rack. I don’t have those but will keep an eye out so I can buy them separately. They aren’t for sale yet individually, but you can check them out here on the Ninja Foodi website linked here.

  7. I got this a week ago and love it. It is just me at home.
Until I get baking pans could I bake something directly in the drip/roast pan? I see you can get
the griddle pan, etc on the ninja web page.

    1. Hi Kathy! I think we’re talking about baked goods, right? While we haven’t tried this yet, you should be able to. My only concerns would be burning on the bottom and trying to remove the bread/cake from the pan since it is pretty deep. It’s also not exactly square. If you do go ahead and bake in it I would reduce the baking temperature by 25 degrees and layer parchment paper so you can lift the cake out more easily. Also, a standard cake 9-inch round cake pan or an 8-inch x 8-inch square cake pan (or any size smaller) will fit inside. This is probably a better way to go. For cookies, I would just use the air crisper insert and line it with parchment paper to cover the holes. Hope this helps! Let us know how you make out.

Also, I don’t think the griddle pan is available just yet for separate purchase yet. As of right now, they’re only available with the other Ninja Foodi Grill model with the integrated thermometer. Happy grilling! – Heather

  8. I ordered the grill but haven’t received it yet and I was wondering up to what size roast this will fit. I’m so excited to get it.

    1. I think a 4-5 pound boneless beef roast should fit in the roasting pan no problem. It would depend on the dimensions though. Cuts that are more compact in shape will fit best. Hope this helps!

    1. I have had the foodi health grill for just over a week. Have used it everyday. Started with just frozen French fries in the basket on air fry. They came out amazing. Tasted like they had been fried. Next it was burgers and sausages on the grill. Lovely. I turned the grill upside down and used a pan liner so I could do fried eggs and pancakes. Again the food was perfect. Next I tried wings on air fry in the basket. OMG! Best wings I ever tasted. Today I did a roast with pork chops, frozen roast potatoes and frozen ready to cook Yorkshire puddings. Amazing! A cheat roast in 30 minutes, gorgeous. I have so many kitchen gadgets. This is now my favourite. I found that I had to reduce all the cooking times by about 10% and also the temperatures by about 20-15 degrees. I flipped everything half way and shook the French fries several times. I would recommend the foodi health grill to anyone. Just keep an eye on everything and use a meat thermometer. I bought one in a local supermarket for about £3. Being in the uk, my ninja did not come with skewers. It didn’t matter as I had some with my air fryer rotisserie oven. I also have, a slow cooker, George Forman grill, pizza and grill oven, slow cooker 8 in 1, a pressure cooker, a microwave pressure cooker. 2 halogen ovens, 1 with rotisserie. I’m sure I’ve missed some. Since receiving the grill, it has been the only appliance I am using. I have used silicone Yorkshire pudding/muffin moulds and they were a perfect fit. I also have silicone baking trays and cake tins that fit the Ninja. So you can use your own bakeware. Just make sure it fits ok. I found the Ninja so easy to keep clean. I just put hot soapy water in and put everything in to soak, including the element splash guard. The Ninja stays hot for quite some times which helps with the soaking and also keeps the food hot for about 15 minutes. I purchased my Ninja from a shopping channel pick of the day. It has a 60 day trial. They will not be getting it back. It’s so versatile and easy to use and clean, you will not be putting it away. From breakfast to desserts and midnight snacks, it’s all you need. 😃❤️

  9. Uh Oh…….I cooked a piece of fish and when done realized that I failed to attach the screen. Did I ruin my new Grill?

  10. Please help! I cooked a piece of fish but failed to install the screen over the heating element in the lid of my Foodi Grill. Please tell me that I didn’t ruin it!

    1. Jay, I think you should be okay. According to the Ninja website, the splatter guard keeps the heating element clean and from smoking while cooking. Just let it cool down, unplug it and clean the heating element as best as you can removing any bits that may have gotten on there. Be sure not to use anything super abrasive like metal scouring pads (brillo, etc.) If you miss any spots it may smoke a little next time you cook, but it shouldn’t be ruined. Let us know how it works out. Call Ninja at 866-826-6941 if you need more intensive help or advice.

  11. Whew. Thanks! I knew something was wrong because it smoked when cooking and it’s not done that before. When I looked inside to see what was up I noticed the screen missing.

  12. All is OK! I cooked some chicken tonight with the temperature probe, with a home made bar-b-que sauce and the grill worked flawlessly!

  13. David here…writing back to tell you that I really like my Ninja Grill. We’ve cooked chicken, fish, turkey burgers, onion rings, veggies…… lots of stuff using the grill function and air crisp. I love the temperature probe – it takes all the guess work about whether or not the protein is cooked. No more over cooked salmon!! My only complaint is that the grill is tough to clean! My wife and I don’t use the dishwasher every night so if I want to use the grill on back-to-back nights I have to hand wash it. And the supplied brush doesn’t adequately reach all the way between the grooves. I’m heading to Bed Bath and Beyond to search for a better grill brush! Overall….I’m a satisfied customer!

    1. Cleaning is never fun and I think the brush is definitely not great. For easy cleaning, I’ve been using a long bristled hand scrubber and soft scrubbing sponges that are mildly abrasive without damaging like these linked here. I’ve found that the best thing to do is lift the grill out with the bottom pan and fill the whole thing with hot water and soap to soak right after you’re done cooking.
This makes it so much easier to scrub down later on. Letting the grill sit and cool after cooking will definitely make it harder to clean.

  14. But does the meat TASTE LIKE IT HAS BEEN BARBEQUED?? Nobody has actually answered this question directly. In a side-by-side taste test, could you tell the difference between food cooked on the Ninja Foodi grill and the same food cooked on a gas barbecue?

    1. I do think it gives a super similar flavor experience and the same crispy BBQ texture to the meat as a gas-fired grill. Would the average person be able to tell the difference? I really don’t think so. If you have a nice bbq sauce or marinade you’re definitely going to get a nice char.

    1. Hi Sandi,
There are two ways to make a London broil in the Ninja Foodi Grill. You can either set the grill on HIGH and then cook for about 9 minutes for Medium, flipping at the half-way mark.
      OR…
You can air crisp the London Broil at 400 degrees F in the air crisper basket and cook for about 7 minutes for medium-rare.
Rest the steaks for 10 minutes before slicing for both cooking methods.

  15. I just received my Ninja Foodi grill yesterday. Today I am going to try a small turkey breast. My question is.. does the bottom get hot? Do I need some sort of insulated pad underneath to protect my new Quartz countertop?

    1. While the grill is slightly elevated, quartz countertops are very heat sensitive. I would say that yes it does emit some heat from below. Just to play it safe I would definitely get something like a cutting board to lay it on to protect your countertops.

  16. When comparing the Ninja Foodi Grill with the Pressure Cooker, you comment on the pressure cooker “but no grill marks” as the down side. This leads me to wonder if you could cook steaks, burgers, etc. in the pressure cooker with the same look and taste as on the grill if you are willing to do without the grill marks.

  17. Very thorough article! Thanks so much! I’ve been confused on all the different models.
A few question I would love to know if possible:
Does this one fit on a punter Top?
    Do you have the dimensions?
Is this the one that flips back?
Hi does the “thermonitor” work? Or clean?

    Thanks again!

    1. Thank you! There are only two models: The Ninja Foodi Grill like we tested here (you can see what’s in the box in the pic above) and the Pro version with the integrated thermometer. Besides the integrated thermometer, the Pro Version also comes with an additional roasting rack.

The upgraded Ninja Foodie Grill Pro model with the integrated thermometer is available on amazon linked here. It’s currently $269.99.

If you buy the upgraded Ninja Foodie Grill Pro model direct from Ninja, it’s $30 more ($299.99) but they throw in some additional accessories like a griddle cup, griddle in addition to the roasting rack and thermometer.

It does fit on a countertop but takes up a good amount of space. So if you have a smaller kitchen I would get it it’s own small kitchen cart or table. Also, the hood of the grill lifts up (both models) so if you have low cabinets this may be an issue.

      The dimensions of both models are 17 L x 14 W x 11 H.

We haven’t tested the model with the thermometer yet but will update when we do.

Hope this helps! Be sure to let us know if you have any other questions! 🙂

  18. Best turkey I’ve ever eaten!

We roasted a 5 pound turkey breast in our Ninja Grill yesterday for Thanksgiving and it was the juciest turkey I’ve ever had and the crispy skin……SO good!!!

  19. I received my Foodi Grill yesterday and made salmon steaks and a ribeye cap for dinner last night. Everything turned out awesome but wanted to caution anyone that’s coming from a different brand air fryer that this grill is not the same as your conventional air fryer and it cooks a lot faster. I was forewarned so I was prepared with my meat thermometer and will continue to use it until I fully understand how this item cooks. I’ve also heard that the cookbook (which is freaking awesome!) recipes might overcook a bit if you follow the cooking times. Haven’t used it yet but something to keep in mind starting out. No critisism, as I love this thing so far. My prior air fryer was on it’s last leg — I loved it and was planning on getting another one but I missed having a sear on my steaks so decided to give the foodi grill a try. So glad I did. Looking forward to using all the different functions as well!

    1. I totally agree that the air fryer cooks a lot faster than you would expect. I found that when using the cooking time guide in the recipe book the grill came with I always find myself cooking on the lower end of their suggestions or even less. Thanks for the great tip Norah!

  20. To add to my comment above, I’m really looking forward to how the wood chips worked for you guys! I’m thinking of doing that or putting a couple drops of liquid smoke in a foil pouch with a few tbsp of water. Either way, looking forward to hearing how it worked out for you guys!

  21. Can I air fry with just the roasting pan inside, without the air fryer basket? Some things I’d like to air fry are liquidy before cooked…..

  22. Waiting on tips using liquid smoke and dry chips for smoking. Have chips from Traeger Grill. Happy New Year everyone.?

    1. I received my Ninja for Christmas, so am a newbie at learning how to cook in this new manner. I just cooked a 2.5 lb. boneless tri-tip roast this evening, and it was great! I am using a Ninja Foodi Smart XL Grill that has an Air Crisper and Grill, plus settings for Roast, Dehydrate, Bake and Broil. After checking out about 6 recipes online, some using a conventional oven and others a Ninja, this is what I came up with:

I trimmed some of the fat from the roast, then covered it with a dry rub (I made my own; recipe below). I put the roast in a gallon baggie to marinate in the refrigerator for about 6 hours before cooking. You can marinate longer, if you want. About 3 hours before cooking, I added about a 1/2 cup of beef broth. You can use cooking wine, if you prefer. One hour before cooking, I took the roast out of the refrigerator to bring to room temperature.

To cook, I preheated the Ninja on Roast, set the temperature to 250 F, and the time to 45 minutes. When the Ninja was preheated, I just put the roast in the cooking pot, closed the lid, and let it cook. At half-way, the Ninja beeped, so I took a peak and used an external thermometer to check the internal temperature. It was around 125 F at that point. So I let it continue cooking to the end of the 45 minutes. When checking the roast at 45 minutes, it looked a bit too red, so I added 5 more minutes of cooking. As I said, I am new to Ninja cooking, and I should have heeded the advice that the protein continues to cook after removing from the cooking pot. Our roast was very delicious and not dry, but we would have preferred to have it pinker. The extra 5 minutes was unnecessary!

Here’s my dry rub, enough for a 2.5 – 3 lb. beef roast: 1 tsp. dried thyme, 1 tsp. dried basil, 1 tsp. dried marjoram, 1 tsp. dry mustard, 3/4 tsp. garlic salt, 1/4 – 1/2 tsp. pepper (to taste).

      Enjoy!

    1. You could make a frittata or something similar if you have the griddle cup or a small heat-proof baking dish. 375 degrees should be fine. The heat on the grill shuts off once the lid is open so you can’t really scramble an egg the traditional way.

  23. I have the multi purpose pan for the Ninja Foodi Grill. Want to make lasagna but think if I put the pan directly in the bottom pan, the food will not cook through as there is no heat to the bottom pan. Cannot seem to find a flat rack.

  24. Just purchased my Ninja foodie grill can’t wait to try it out. My question is can it sit on my counter while cooking or do I need to move it out to another area. First meal will be chicken breast and grilled vegetables! Thank you

    1. How exciting Pauline! I would say that it all depends on your counters and how much space you have. If you have low hanging cabinets it may be an issue. But if you have a decent amount of space you should be fine. I use mine all the time and it now has its own little table so I don’t have to keep moving it.

  25. Can the Ninja Foodie Grill cook a frozen beef roast? What would be the recommended cooking time and temperature for a 3-pound roast?

  26. Hi! I am new to the Ninja Foodi Grill … so far loving it! I tried the Air Crisper Hard-Cooked Eggs (like hard-boiled) – Place the eggs in the air crisper basket and cook at 250°F for 13 minutes. My model would not let me set temp below 300 ? I left it there and reduced the time to 11 mins and it seemed ok… maybe a little overcooked but turned out good. Is there another way to take the temp below 300?

  27. I just got my Foodie Grill. So far I’m loving it. I’m an over the road truck driver and this is going to make eating on the road so much nicer, cheaper and healthier. My question is, can the roasting pan be used to make soups and stews. I haven’t seen anything on that yet.

  28. I genuinely love this thing! I use it every night. Cooks great, clean up is SUPER EASY. Best cooking tool I have ever had! I HIGHLY recommend it for busy cooks!

  30. Hello. I am considering the Ninja Foodie grill. Does it splatter outside of the appliance? We have a small kitchen and I wonder if there is cleanup required for canisters, backsplash, etc. Linda

    1. You’ll be happy to hear there is absolutely no cleanup or splatter outside the Ninja Foodi Grill! Once you close the lid the food is contained within. There is also a removable splatter guard on the underside of the grill hood that protects the heating element. Hope this helps!

  31. Wanted to order this product on @ lovefoodigrill.com. on TV,$35.95 for 5 payments. Now, on this BS add, jumps too $39.95. ?????

  32. I love it but hate to clean it! The grill grate is ridiculous! I soak it for 12 hours, scrub it throw it in dishwasher and it still has remnants of grease on the grates! What am i doing wrong?

  33. Hi there! I just bought my grill and cannot wait to use it. I saw a while back ya’ll mentioned using wood chips. Did you ever do this and if so, how did it turn out? I am thinking about putting liquid smoke in my marinades, but I have a lot of chips from our smoker that I can use. Thanks in advance.

  34. I have the Ninja Foodie 4 quart 5 in 1 grill. I also have the griddle . I would like to fry eggs on it. I also have the 75 recipe book. I have looked all over the Internet and I can’t find a recipe that tells me at what temperature and how much time is needed to cook over easy eggs etc. I also have the cup, however, I would like to cook the eggs using the griddle to cook more than one. I need a temperature and a time.

  35. I am trying to find a recipe for boneless skinless chicken breasts for my Ninja Foodi Grill. Everyone I have found include using the pressure cooker, that I don’t have. Do you know where I could find a recipe that could help me? I just got my grill so I’m definitely a Newbie.

    1. Hi Jan! The pressure cooker recipes definitely won’t do. But any chicken breast recipe intended for grilling will. You can also use any marinade recipe and just grill the chicken breast on HIGH for about 16 minutes flipping halfway through. There’s a really easy recipe you can get started with for BBQ Chicken Breasts in the recipe book that came with your grill. You can also try the recipe here with just chicken. The Ninja Foodi cookbook also has a guide in the back with settings and temperatures for specific pieces of meat. Hope this helps!

  36. What is a good time and temp for frozen hamburger patties on the grill? I have tried them once and thought they were a little too dry. Any tips?

    1. Try preheating the grill on MEDIUM, and then once you add the frozen burger patties on there, turn it down to the LOW grill setting to cook through. Time can vary depending on the thickness of the burger, but try cooking about 10-12 minutes flipping halfway through. If it’s not cooked enough after 12 minutes you can always throw it back on. And if you don’t have one, a meat thermometer can be handy too to gauge doneness and avoid overcooking.

  37. Thanks to your sharing, I’ve known that I can grill or fry any veggies or pieces of meat without using oil with this kitchen utensil. I’m on a diet, so I’m finding the recipe that I can reduce fat in my dishes. Thanks!

  38. Love my new Ninja, had it a couple of days. A question about the heating increments. When changing increments should it adjust in 5 F increments. Mine gives me a variety at ,from 5,10,15 and 25 F increments.. this is new for me.I was wondering if my Ninja is faulty or is this it’s nature?

  39. 1. Can a regular oven thermometer be left in the meat during the Foodi Grill cooking process?

    2. Recommended temp and time for reheating a single serving precooked dinner (not frozen)
    Thanks!

    1. 1 – A regular oven safe thermometer should be fine. You still have to lift the lid to check it so I would just take the temp after. You can try both ways and see what works best for you.
2 – 350 degrees F is what I usually use. If you’re looking to get things crispy on the reheat, switch it over to the air fry function.

Let us know how it works out!

  40. I love the taste of olive oil but don’t want to risk any smoke during cooking.
Can I cook without oil altogether and apply my olive oil after cooking?

    1. Judy, I don’t recommend cooking without using any oil at all, unless you’re just reheating something like frozen foods in the the air fryer. Food will definitely stick to the grill for sure. Extra virgin olive oil’s smoke point runs around 374–405°F (190–207°C) so if you’re only cooking around there you should be okay. My favorite healthy cooking oil alternative to olive oil with a high smoke point of 500°F is avocado oil. Neutral in flavor, simply pour it into your own spray bottle or buying it in a spray can is really convenient. It is a bit pricier than olive oil though. If you have a Costco membership, you can get packs of two cans of Chosen Avocado oil for 5.99 which is a great deal. Hope this helps!

  41. We love our grill had it a yr now and use it daily! Bought my parents one after we used ours. Now I am trying newer things how do I do baked potatoes?

    1. Love that Leann! Try making the baked potatoes with the air crisp function. Preheat to 400 degrees, brush the potatoes with a little oil (I like avocado oil for its high smoke point, neutral taste and heart-healthy fats), place them in the basket and air fry for about 40 minutes or more. Cooking time will depend on how big your potatoes are. Stick them with a fork to check them at 35 minutes and go from there. Hope this helps! – Heather

  42. Just bought my Ninja Foodi 5-1 Grill and have a question. In one of the recipes you mentioned to preheat the grill then spray with oil. Can you spray with the oil before you preheat it? Thanks!

  43. I just bought the larger Ninja Foodi Grill XL with the built-in meat thermometer.

FYI: This larger version does not have the dehydrate function, and the lowest temp setting is 300° for air crisp, 250° for roast, and 250° for bake.

We used it last night for perch fillers, and it was the best fish I’ve ever made- didn’t stick to the grill, and perfectly done inside with a yummy crunchy breading.

  44. Hi help i clean my ninji after every use yet it smells of fish…No i don’t cook fish…I remove the splatter guard and all dishes that sit inside ,Yet still it smells, what’s wrong i leave it soaking before washing in clean water no food marks or residue are left on… so why why why ,please help

  45. There are a variety of options available for eating authentic Korean barbecue. Los Angeles is home to numerous restaurants that serve Korean bulgogi and Korean barbecue. It is also possible to eat a variety of Korean hot pots. They are usually served with rice. On the Korean BBQ portion on the menu you will find numerous options to choose from. There are many places to pick from when searching for the finest Korean barbecue. There is also an establishment located in Koreatown that offers this cuisine.

  46. I ordered my ninja foodie air fryer grill and it’s coming tomorrow and I was browsing around looking for information on it and came across your website! What a phenomenal website. I got more information reading your website on my ninja foodie Air fryer grill that I have anywhere else. And your Vietnamese mix grill looks phenomenal I will probably just do the chicken part is that look fantastic. But definitely have this website saved as a top favorite! Oh I initially came across that because I was looking to see if I could use my little smoker 10 that I use on my regular outdoor grill in my ninja foodie and that’s how I found your website!

  47. +I am on my 2nd Fooji grill, the first one was higher end with the thermometer. After I ruined it by trying to clean the area protected by the splatter . So bought another similar model and actually bought one for my grandson’s wedding gift as well. My question is; how to clean above the splatter guard where the actual heat coils are. That area seems to be inaccessable, but is covered with greasy deposit. It would seem to me if left to continue accummulating, the unit would die.

  48. I got a Ninja grill
And as single busy man, I can say that it is the best thing I have got for 2025
It helped me to prepare healthy food and tasty in a very short time
    Diffidently worths the price
